Speed(?) Session
By Tom
The waves dropped off after yesterdays epic session so I decided to take the speed board out for a run as it looked quite windy. The wind turned a bit east and I got out too late to catch the best of it. It was obvious Sprecks was out of the question as it was too offshore and way too shallow. I decided to go to the nearest beach by the treatment plant in hopes of finding some wind inside the waves.
When I got there I had the place to myself, but within a few minutes Dan Ellis and Robby Swift showed up with a different plan - to go wave sailing! Normally speed sailing and wave sailing don't occur in the same spot, but hey this is Maui!
It turned out to be a less than stellar session as the winds were super gusty and too offshore. Trust me there is nothing worse than trying to slog out to the wind-line on speed gear! it was no picnic for the fellow Brits on their wave gear either! Dan broke his mast, just sailing along so he claimed! I took a break from the speed sailing and took a swim to help him get his gear in. I've done that swim in with broken gear quite a few times and I know help is always welcome!
At the end of the day it was a lot of hard work for not very impressive speeds. There was some potential there but the wind would just not fill in to the inside where the flatter water was. It was howling outside but mega choppy and slow. It was enough however to claim fastest speed posted in USA in 2009 so far! I get to gloat for a few months in the winter when it is too cold on the mainland for anyone to sail! Then the gorge boys all put me to shame.

yo T ,
Story sounds familiar, went half way to hana, kula way for a photo session. Man was it blowing in the Alenuiha'ha channel!! barely hold the camera still.
thought i was golden for a late day sesh.
Got to the uppers at 230pm, kode 86 and 4.7 fire. For 45 minutes or so , lots of power , then luuuuuuulls,( the warning??) then and being passed by swells and fellow albiet lighter sailors.
ARRRG. ( well i hope it wasnt my poor frozen Canuck technique)
Then i did the swim of shame in at around 400 pm with a dozen or so hapless sailors, who decided ( wisely??) to head in.
ahh but misery does enjoy company!
Well a few cold pints settled my mood after seeing it pick up at 400 -430 pm.
