Why I Break Booms
By Tom
I am still experimenting with the Go Pro camera and different mounts for it. This one turned out to be eye opening! Until I saw this video I had no idea of how much the boom was flexing whilst I was sailing. This is an Alloy slalom boom in action. I stuck this together really quickly so no soundtrack or fancy editing!

Tom,
It's hard to tell with the sail moving, but it looks like most of the movement in the boom is between the main tubes and the tail piece. Interesting to see that.
would be interesting to se the same cam mount on a carbon boom..
The other thing is does it matter? I know that I am faster on a road bike that has a certain amount of controlled flex in it than one that is too stiff. The boom flex may just cushion the bumps that little bit meaning that the bumps are not passed up it to the rig to disturb the airflow.
Dude, I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the boom to explode and you to go down in a massive tangle of flesh and aluminum.
What a let down!
